What is Ship Vetting?

A Vessel Vetting Assessment is a risk management tool to assist our clients in avoiding interactions with unsuitable vessels. These vessels or their owners/managers may have a track record of poor maintenance, high casualties or breaches of international sanctions.

The fragmented structure of the shipping industry means a vessel can change name, ownership, flag, technical manager many times and appear like a completely different vessel. Judging acceptability based only on high-level information such as age, flag or commercial counterparty are proven to not be reliable indicators of a vessel's technical and operational performance or sanction status.

Don’t Judge a Ship By It’s Cover

A reputable commercial counterparty may control the vessel's employment but have no involvement in the maintenance or crewing of the vessel. A vessel may appear under a first class brand despite having a high risk of breakdown potential exposing your cargo to an extended period of detention.

Technical managers are tasked with keeping maintenance costs to a minimum to maximise profit, and in an inflationary environment, this can mean reduced periodic repairs or reduction in insurance cover, Global marine insurance premiums increased 5.9% in 2023**.

Unrivalled Experience

We’ve executed over 80,000 assessments over the last 20 years for our clients, each time a vessel is assessed the feedback is captured by our team in our database.

Robust Assessments

Even if a vessel changes its name, or a technical manager has a fleet that overall is encountering frequent incidents our team can use this unique data paired with the latest inspection reports to provide a robust assessment of the vessel.

Key Features of our Vetting Assessments

  • Review of the latest independent report(s): SIRE, CDI, BIRE, PSC
  • Assessment of technical vessel specifications: VPQ, BPQ or Q88
  • Our assessors review any observations and judge if the submitted close-out reasoning is acceptable. Where we see anomalies or insufficient feedback, our assessors have direct channel communication to the vessel's technical managers to discuss in more detail
  • Operational risk forecasting based on the vessel and technical managers incident record or crew’s experience

Meet the team
Arrow Icon

We intimately understand how vessels are maintained.

We know where a small comment on a report can be an indicator of systemic lack of care and periodic maintenance or potentially an acceptable risk.

We stand behind our assessments and understand you or the vessel owners may have feedback, we welcome this and are contactable to work through this within the commercial or operational deadlines you may have.

Let our team manage the review of large unstructured data, to give you a reasonable and concise view to move your business forward.
